We are committed to educating people about looking after themselves with herbs, and how to use plants that they can grow and harvest.
Regular courses and herb walks are held throughout the year. They will give you the confidence to start using herbs, harvesting and making your own herbal medicine.

All courses and walks are run by the Rhizome Herbalists, Becs Griffiths and Annwen Jones, both qualified medical herbalists (MNIMH).

Spring First Aid weekend in Wales.
Learn how to use herbs in common first aid and acute illnesses. Explore what makes up a herbal first aid kit, and begin to build you own. We will prepare some vital herbal medicines to go into your own first aid kit, including a bruise salve, a healing cream, a herbal antiseptic and healing poultices. There will be a walk in the beautiful countryside to identify and collect useful local herbs.

Spring Equinox Herb Walk
Wednesday 20th March 5.30 pm outside St Werburghs City Farm.
Come and join us in marking this March equinox, which finally signifies the beginning of spring. We will take a walk around and discover the spring herbs growing locally and talk about their traditional and modern uses.

Beltane Herb Walk
Tuesday 30th April 6.30pm outside St Werburghs City Farm
With our delayed spring finally (hopefully) in full swing, come with us to search out spring flowers and medicinal plants, at Beltane, a time of fertility and growth.
We will finish the walk with a herbal tea of a herb we harvested on the walk.

Summer Solstice Herb Walk
Tuesday 18th June 6.30pm outside St Werburghs City Farm
As solstice approaches, and the sun is high in the sky we will wander, looking for the summer flowers in bloom and hoping to find St Johns Wort which begins to flower around the solstice.
We will finish the walk with a herbal tea of a herb we harvested on the walk.

Summer Foundation Course starting 22 May 2013.
(Wednesdays 6.30 – 9pm excluding half term week) St Werburghs Community Centre
Take your first steps on a fascinating exploration of plant based medicine. Each week we will take an in-depth look at herbs that grow in the local area and discover their fascinating uses.
This hands-on course will give you the skills to make your own herbal first-aid kit as well as creams, tinctures and syrups that you will be able to take home with you.
This course will inspire you to confidently begin using herbs effectively and safely.
The course will cover:
- Medicine Making – tinctures, syrups, vinegars, ointments
- How to make herbal teas and decoctions
- Foundation for good health
- How to make your own herbal first-aid kit
- Winter tonics for coughs and colds
- Introduction to new local herbs each week
The cost is £140/£120 concession. A deposit of £50 is required to secure your place and then full payment is due a week before the course starts.

***New Course*** Rhizome Summer School – Plant Studies
5 week course on Monday evenings 6.30-9 pm, starting 1st July 2013. St Werburghs
Focusing solely on the medicinal plants themselves, we plan to spend much of this course outside. We will walk amongst the plants, learn to identify them with basic botany, harvest them and make medicine from them including fresh tinctures and distillates. We will look more closely at some of the local plants and their habitats and get to know them in more depth. The course will include visits to local community gardens and a field trip to Bristol Botanical Gardens. You do not need to have been on any previous courses to join us.
The cost is £120/£100 concession. A deposit of £50 is required to secure your place and then full payment is due a week before the course starts.
